Comments (1) A TOOWOOMBA youth worker has welcomed the STATE Government’s plan to build more housing for the city’s abused teenagers.
KEVIN SAIDE says young people will receive shelter, education and counselling under the plan.
CAITLYN GRIBBIN reports the Government will provide $30-million for housing abused teenagers across the state over the next four years.
TRANSCRIPT:
TOOWOOMBA already has a youth residential crisis shelter but youth workers say the alternative, foster care, doesn’t always work for troubled young people. YOUTH Service Manager KEVIN SAIDE says the new house may be a better option than foster care. “Some young people’s behaviour is too difficult for foster parents, so therefore they really do need these types of facilities that can offer 24-hour care plus a lot of support to manage some of the difficult kids that we see.” Mr SAIDE says there’s a critical shortage of accommodation for abused young people in TOOWOOMBA. Staff at the home will provide professional assistance for victims of abuse and neglect. Funding for the project will be announced in next month’s STATE budget.
